Classical Music Playlist, March 23, 2022
200 years after it was first known to have been performed in 1784, in 1984 the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF) recorded Mozart's Serenade #10 in B-Flat Major (K.361), also known as the "Gran Partita" Serenade, for the soundtrack of the film "Amadeus." The film won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for F. Murray Abraham as Antonio Salieri who first encounters Mozart's enviable talent in the sublime third movement of the "Gran Partita." The fictionalized account makes Salieri confess, "It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.” And this set off his character's contempt-slash-envy of Mozart's compositional talent throughout the film. You’ll hear that third movement from the film, and the entire “Gran Partita” Serenade as recorded by the ASMF, at 2:00pm for today’s Midday Masterpiece.
And listen throughout the day for today's featured women in classical music for Women's History Month: French composer Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) and British saxophonist Jess Gillam (b. 1998).
