Danish composer Carl Nielsen (appx 1908)
Danish composer Carl Nielsen began work on his symphony #4 in 1914, at the outset of WWI. Perhaps the conflict of war prompted him to think about the indestructibility of the will to live - not just in mankind but in all things, including plants and animals - and it was this force he wanted to convey in his new music. After finishing the symphony he explained “that if the whole world were devastated…and all things were destroyed and dead, nature would still begin to breed new life again, begin to push forward again with all the fine and strong forces inherent in matter. These forces, which are inextinguishable, are what I have tried to express.” And that explains his title: Carl Nielsen’s Symphony #4, “The Inextinguishable,” is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm
And listen throughout the day for today's featured women in classical music for Women's History Month: Venetian composer Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) and Canadian violinist & conductor Angèle Dubeau (her 60th birthday today! Born in 1962).
