Italian Landscape with Umbrella Pines [gardens of the Villa Borghese] (1807) by Hendrik Voogd (1768-1839)
Just as Ottorino Respighi’s suite “The Fountains of Rome” depicts four fountains at various times of day (when the light on them is the most beautiful), Respighi’s “Pines of Rome” does the same except with trees at four historic locations around the famed city: the Villa Borghese gardens, at the entrance of a Roman catacomb, on Janiculum Hill, and along the Appian Way. “Pines of Rome” is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
And listen throughout the day for today's featured women in classical music for Women's History Month: American composers Sarah Kirkland Snider & Missy Mazzoli.
