Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) in 1894.
The publisher of Johannes Brahms’s music invited him, in his later years, to revise any of his earlier works. He chose to take a second look at his opus 8 Piano Trio #1 in B-major. The original version was from his youth in 1854, and he made the later major revision in 1889. But because trusted friends such as Clara Schumann had reservations about the revision, Brahms wanted both versions to remain available. Indeed, the revisions are so major that it’s often called an entirely new work; Brahms called it the “New Edition” of the Trio. The later revision is typically the version now performed, and you’ll hear it today at 2:00pm on CapRadio Music.
