Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
People have proposed a number of theories why Franz Schubert never completed his 8th Symphony, what we, therefore, now call the “Unfinished.” But judging by the two existing movements, he was on the road to a successful composition. A nearly completed third movement Scherzo in piano score with just a couple pages orchestrated also exists, but the two full movements are usually all that are performed. And you’ll hear them as Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony #8 for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00pm.
