Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927)
Swedish pianist, composer, and conductor Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) completed his Piano Concerto #2 on his 36th birthday in 1907. As one of Sweden’s greatest pianists, he HAD been performing his Piano Concerto #1 for years but got tired of it, wrote the 2nd which is a much more mature work and still hugely popular in Sweden. But he didn’t perform the 2nd Concerto as much because he had turned more to conducting for the rest of his life. With its intriguing conflicts between the piano and orchestra (often playing in different keys), Wilhelm Stenhammar’s inventive yet immensely listenable Piano Concerto #2 is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
