Composer Kurt Atterberg (1887-1974) in 1919
Kurt Atterberg’s Symphony #3, titled “West Coast Pictures,” does not depict our own U.S. west coast but rather a tiny coastal village on the western shore of an Island in Sweden. Atterberg completed the symphony in 1916 as a unified work that began as three stand-alone musical pictures: Sun-Smoke, Storm, and Summer Night. Take a little trip to Atterberg’s charming Swedish maritime village with the “West Coast Pictures” of his Symphony #3, today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
