Háry János, the title character of the 1926 opera by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, is a spinner of tall tales about his own heroism. He claims to have won the heart of Napoleon’s wife and single-handedly defeated Napoleon’s armies. But in the end, he misses his village sweetheart and gives up all his make-believe riches to be with her. In a note to his publisher Kodály described Háry as symbolic of the Hungarian people: dreamers and poets, with the potential to accomplish heroic dreams. The “Háry János Suite” of musical episodes from the opera is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
