Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) in 1894.
In the 100 years since Mozart was inspired by a clarinetist to compose his only Clarinet Quintet in 1789, there had been only a few significant other Clarinet Quintets until Johannes Brahms composed his only Clarinet Quintet in 1891. Brahms had actually retired from composing when, like Mozart, he was also inspired by a clarinetist. So he came out of retirement and wrote his Quintet, a Clarinet Trio and Two Sonatas for this clarinetist. Composed when he was at the height of his powers in the twilight of his life and expressing an understandably reflective mood, the Brahms Clarinet Quintet is widely recognized as one of THE great works of chamber music, and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
