As a 17 year old student at the Paris Conservatory George Bizet composed a symphony that he soon forgot about and never mentioned in any of his notebooks or letters. Eighty years later - sixty years after his death - Bizet’s early symphony had its premiere in 1935 and caused a sensation. It was immediately hailed as a youthful masterpiece and famed choreographer George Balanchine even choreographed it into a ballet in 1947. George Bizet's early Symphony in C is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
