Though Gabriel Fauré was a religious skeptic, his Requiem is nonetheless based on the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead. He said, “everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.” In remembrance of his birthday today (1845), Fauré's beautiful Requiem is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
