Haydn’s next to last symphony, #103, picked up the nickname the “Drumroll” symphony for the rolling timpani that opens the work. It was the eleventh of twelve symphonies Haydn composed specifically for premiere in London where audiences loved him. It’s one of his most popular symphonies even today, and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
