In the hundred years between Mozart and the end of the 19th century, few major composers had written Piano Quartets. Brahms and Fauré were exceptions who tackled the challenge of finding an equitable balance between the three string voices and piano. Czech composer Antonín Dvořák had written one in 1875 and in 1889 his publisher had the good luck to ask for a second while Dvořák was in a particularly productive period. While composing his new quartet, Dvořák wrote to a friend that, “It's going unexpectedly easily and melodies are coming to me in droves.” Hear Dvořák’s easily produced result of the difficult task, his Piano Quartet No. 2, for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
