Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) in 1888
Lots of composers wrote music based on folk songs and dances from their own native countries or from others they visited. Antonín Dvořák has his Slavonic Dances, Johannes Brahms wrote his Hungarian Dances, and Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg composed his Symphonic Dances based on tunes from Norwegian country dances and a melody from a folk wedding song. His suite of them is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
