Soon after the premiere of his ballet “Sleeping Beauty,” Tchaikovsky considered compiling a suite but after much discussion with friends he eventually declined. However he repeatedly mentioned that the renowned conductor and arranger Alexander Ziloti would be the one for the job if anyone else were to take it: “He is generally sympathetic to my music.” Tchaikovsky passed away in 1893 with no suite ever created until 1899 which does appear to have been arranged by Ziloti. The “Sleeping Beauty Suite” is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
