Johannes Brahms circa 1885
It took a couple years for Johannes Brahms to complete his Piano Trio No. 2, which he wrote at the height of his powers at about the same time as his Violin Concerto, Piano Concerto #2 and the year before finishing his Symphony #3. And he was proud of it, writing to his publishers that they'd never received such a beautiful trio from him and that they "very likely have not published its equal in the last ten years." His close friend and confidante Clara Schumann also admired the Trio, calling it "a splendid work" and "a great musical treat." The Brahms Piano Trio No. 2 is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
