Composer & Pianist John Field (1782-1837)
Mentorships in music have a long history. As a youth, Italian born composer and pianist Muzio Clementi enjoyed the sponsorship of a wealthy British patron who brought him to England to further his studies. Later, Clementi found a young Irish piano prodigy, John Field, whom Clementi mentored and brought to major European cities. In later years Field, in turn, became an influence on a long line of pianists and composers including Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Frédéric Chopin who advanced Field’s invention of the Nocturne to new heights. The Piano Concerto #2 by John Field is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
