Just after the First World War, English composer Edward Elgar was in uncomfortable conditions. The war had distressed him terribly; he was financially stressed and had lost dear friends. He had been suffering throat problems and in early 1918 had an infected tonsil removed. Soon after, Elgar and his wife Alice, who had also been suffering health problems, moved to the English countryside where he worked in a small studio separate from the cottage they rented. He took walks in the woods and heartily chopped firewood. In this environment he composed a number of notable chamber works which Alice noted was all splendid music with a new focus and rejuvenated imagination. His Piano Quintet in A-minor came from this period and, though partly expressing a fresh view of life in the relaxed countryside, the music retains echoes of the sadness. Edward Elgar’s 1919 Piano Quintet in A-minor is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
