Photo portrait of Igor Stravinsky, Russian composer.

Stravinsky began composing his "Symphony in C" in Paris in 1938 and completed it in Los Angeles in 1940. Between those dates was the most painful period of his life. His wife and daughter died of tuberculosis; he then was hospitalized with it. His mother died. With war rising in the late 1930s, he fled Europe; first from Paris to New York and Boston, later to Los Angeles. He would cite that the effort and distraction of writing this symphony got him through that most painful period. Composed for the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Stravinsky denied any association of the music to the events in his life. We celebrate Stravinsky’s birthday, and his endurance through tragedy, with his “Symphony in C” for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
