Finnish composer Jean Sibelius was virtually the only person from Finland known to the world for many years. As such, he was so revered in his home country that the Finnish government commissioned Sibelius to compose a new symphony, his Fifth, for the celebrations of his 50th birthday in 1915 which was declared a national holiday. After he conducted that premiere performance, Sibelius revised the symphony a couple times. The final 1919 version of the Sibelius Symphony No. 5 is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
