Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1880. Source: Library of Congress
One of the greatest piano concertos ever written actually received insults and rejection when it was new and was called unplayable. After its premiere, one scathing review said it would never become an enduring work. They were all wrong. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is now recognized as one of the masterwork piano concertos, and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
