Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Alone at home in Leipzig in early 1842, while his wife Clara was on tour as a pianist, Robert Schumann began to study string quartets including those of Mozart and Beethoven. Upon Clara's return and acting as Robert's muse, he then composed three string quartets in the summer of 1842. Soon after, he presented the quartets to music publisher Breitkopf & Härtel with the promise that after having been played several times already "they seemed to give pleasure to players and listeners, and especially also to Mendelssohn. It is not for me to say anything more about them; but you may rest assured that I have spared no pains to produce something really respectable — indeed, I sometimes think my best." One of these, Schumann's String Quartet in A-major (op. 41/3) is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
