Niccolò Paganini in an 1831 illustration
Violinist Niccolò Paganini was the sort of Jimi Hendrix of the violin in the early 1800s. He amazed audiences with a style that had never been heard before and could make his violin sound like wind instruments, the human voice and even animals. Some people proposed that he had sold his soul to the devil to play like that. He would tune the violin differently to make his playing more expressive but also more difficult, and invented techniques of staccato and other tricks that have since become standard. Hear violinist Midori play the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1 for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
