The Storming of the Bastille by Jean-Pierre Houël (1735–1813)
Today is Bastille Day in France and we’re celebrating with the music of George Gershwin! (“Wait… what?”) Yes! Here’s how we figured it: the American Revolutionary War against the British crown formally ended when a delegation of Americans in Paris, including John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, negotiated and signed the Treaty of Paris in 1783. (The French had fought with the US against Britain, which caused them financial difficulties that fomented problems contributing to the French Revolution.) There was another American in Paris since 1784, Thomas Jefferson, when on July 14, 1789 citizens mobbed the Bastille in Paris that ignited the French Revolution and soon led to greater democracy in France. Jefferson helped the French to draft documents that would eventually work their way into the first French Constitution of 1791. We’ll celebrate this legacy of Americans in France with George Gershwin’s musical reflections of his own travel in 1926 as “An American In Paris.” It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
