Sergei Prokofiev | Color by Klimbim (Olga Shirnina) who grants free use.
Composers are hoarders, in a sense. They hold onto musical ideas they “might use someday” instead of throwing out material that isn’t working for them at the moment. For his Third Piano Concerto, retrieving these old ideas proved very successful to Sergei Prokofiev. He completed the Concerto in 1921 using musical ideas from his sketchbooks and uncompleted projects from between 1911 and 1918, and the Concerto became one of the most popular of the 20th century and still is HIS most popular. In a Grammy-winning recording from 1998 with soloist Martha Argerich, the Piano Concerto No. 3 by Sergei Prokofiev is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
