Robert and Clara Schumann in 1847
In early 1836 Robert Schumann composed a piano piece expressing his heartache of being separated from Clara Schumann - not his wife until four years later - writing to her in 1838 that he meant it as “a deep lament for you.” But months after composing the piece in 1836 he decided to add two more movements to it as a submission toward a fundraising project to erect a monument to Beethoven organized by Franz Liszt. When the piece was published in 1839 Schumann dedicated it to Liszt, who expressed his deep appreciation (but never played it in public) and in writing to Clara about the dedication, Schumann no longer separated from her and the two soon to be married, he now had “no reason to compose such unhappy and melancholy music.” So the piece remains a testament to his love for Clara (and how unhappy he could be separated from her), and to Schumann’s idol Beethoven with appreciation to Liszt. Having had various titles and movement descriptions before it was published as the “Fantasie,” it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
