Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Beethoven was a lifelong inspiration to Franz Schubert and when he was commissioned to write a work similar to Beethoven’s Septet, Schubert modeled his new music on his idol’s very popular composition from 24 years earlier. Schubert styled the movements the same and used the same instrumentation as Beethoven except for the addition of a second violin, making the new work an Octet. It even premiered at the home of the dedicatee of Beethoven’s Septet and with some of the same musicians. Franz Schubert’s Octet in F is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
