If you wanted to stage a work at the Paris Opera in the 1800s, the rules were clear – it had to include a ballet. Paris had been the capital of the ballet world for centuries, and from Rossini & Verdi & Tchaikovsky, no composers were immune, no matter how famous.
So when the Paris Opera commissioned Tchaikovsky in 1879 to write an opera based on Joan of Arc, his task was clear – he had to include ballet music, too. The opera itself is filled with historical inaccuracies and is rarely performed today, but Tchaikovsky’s dance music lives on. The Dances from The Maid of Orleans are today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2pm.
