Even a hundred years after the Declaration of Independence, American musical education was still in its infancy. Like many American composers through the 1800s, John Knowles Paine, born in Maine in 1839, received his music education in Europe. In 1861 he settled in the increasingly fertile musical environment of Boston where he soon began an association with Harvard University; first as organist with a University chapel, then in 1874 as a full professor where he developed the first university music curriculum in the United States which would become a model for later American universities. His first symphony from 1875 was also the first ever composed by an American. The Symphony #1 by America’s father of music education, John Knowles Paine, is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
