Tchaikovsky opens his Symphony No. 4 with a fanfare that he pessimistically described in a letter as representing:
"the fatal power which prevents one from attaining the goal of happiness... There is nothing to be done but to submit to it and lament in vain [and] drift upon that sea until it engulfs and submerges you in its depths."
But fortunately, the final movement is completely opposite and the symphony ends triumphantly. Hear Riccardo Muti, who celebrates his 81st birthday today, conduct the Symphony No. 4 by Tchaikovsky for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00pm.
