Beethoven in his Study by Carl Schloesser (circa 1811)
Beethoven's "Appassionata" Piano Sonata is his most dark and furious. Written between about 1803 and 1806 when he was coming to grips with his deafness, as well as unrequited loves and stormy relationships with patrons, the work begins in a brooding dark mood then ends in a ferocious conclusion. Perhaps you've felt like this at some point and, at the end, threw things and pounded the walls. You might hear that in Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23, today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
