The clarinet was fairly new and going through lots of design changes in the couple decades around 1800 or so, it being different for Mozart (who died 1791) than it was even just in 1811 when Carl Maria Von Weber exploited the instrument’s most recent modifications for his Clarinet Concerto No. 1. Weber’s gift for melody and understanding of the instrument’s capabilities has kept the Concerto among the first rank of compositions for the clarinet for over two centuries. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
