Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1880. Source: Library of Congress
Great reviews and applause are things any artist would love, especially if you have a tendency to pessimism, mood swings and self-doubt. So when the public AND critics loved Tchaikovsky’s Third Orchestral Suite, he was beside himself with happiness. Six days later he wrote to his patroness Nadezhda von Meck that, "reality far exceeded my expectations. I have never before experienced such a triumph. I saw that the entire mass of the audience was moved, and grateful to me. These moments are the finest adornment of the artist's life. Thanks to these it is worth living and laboring." Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3 is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
