With the accession of Franz Joseph to the throne of the Austrian Empire in 1848, hopes were high that he would also be crowned King of Bohemia and in the process give it some autonomy within the Empire. With hopeful nationalist spirit high in Bohemia in 1854, Czech composer Bedřich Smetana wrote his only symphony. It's a triumphant work that recognizes the Austrian Emperor with repeated quotations of a hymn that Haydn composed in 1797 that became associated with then Emperor Franz II. But when the anticipated coronation of Franz Joseph never happened (including in future years when hopes were again raised), disappointment in the Emperor led to the unpopularity of Smetana's symphony with its citations of the "Emperor" theme. In 1881, the composer made some modifications to the score and you'll hear a performance by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra that made even more cuts to the "Festive" Symphony by Bedřich Smetana for our Midday Masterpiece today at 2:00 pm.
