The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa oki nami ura) by Hokusai.
Happy Birthday today to Claude Debussy, born on this date in 1862! Since childhood Debussy had a fascination with the sea. For his three symphonic sketches collectively titled “La Mer” (The Sea), he took inspiration from literature and art including the iconic woodblock print from about 1830 by Japanese artist Hokusai, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” which Debussy requested to be printed on the cover of the published music and which he had a framed print of in his home. Hear Debussy’s impressionistic evocation of the sea at different times of day, the play of the waves and the interaction of the wind and waves, in “La Mer,” today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
