Composer Howard Hanson (1896-1981)
American composer Howard Hanson was born to Swedish immigrant parents in Wahoo, Nebraska, in 1896. After studying music locally he attended the forerunner of the Julliard School in New York City, then Northwestern and then, in 1916, he was hired to teach music theory and composition at the original University of the Pacific in San Jose before it moved to Stockton in 1924. In 1921 Hanson won the Prix de Rome in Music that won him paid study in Italy for two years where Ottorino Respighi was a personal influence and mentor. In Italy he composed his Symphony No. 1, "Nordic," which premiered in Rochester, New York, in 1923, earning him the attention of Eastman School of Music founder George Eastman who hired him to be the School's Director. Hanson held this position 40 years and created one of the most prestigious music schools in America. He also won the Pulitzer Prize, a Peabody Award and innumerable other distinctions. Hanson pays tribute to his Scandinavian ancestry in his "Nordic" Symphony No. 1, today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
