The Abruzzo region of Italy that inspired Berlioz' "Harold in Italy." | Image by ClouDan83 from Pixabay
“Harold in Italy” by Hector Berlioz is the musical diary of a traveler, represented by the solo viola throughout the piece. The four movements depict Harold (the viola) wandering in the mountains, witnessing pilgrims singing their evening prayer, a mountaineer serenading his mistress, and the revelry of a band of rogues. Berlioz was inspired by the Lord Byron epic poem “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage” and yet it’s also a musical souvenir of the composer’s own extended stay in Italy. "Harold In Italy" by Hector Berlioz is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
