Wilhelm Peterson-Berger in 1905
For over thirty years Wilhelm Peterson-Berger was Sweden’s most feared music critic. One violinist was known to have said he wouldn’t even begin his performance until Peterson-Berger left the theater. Being so strict and ruthless in his reviews put a target on his back as it’s been suggested that his own compositions might not have withstood his own criticism. But more contemporary looks back at his music essentially rate him as proficient as any Nordic composer of his day. This is especially true for his colorful musical depiction of the arctic Lapland region with its snowy desolation, mountains, winter evenings and summer nights. It’s all in his Symphony No. 3, “Lapland,” today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
