Violinist Pablo de Sarasate
Really more of a Concerto with Spanish motifs throughout, Édouard Lalo composed his Symphonie espagnole for, and perhaps in consultation with, the great Spanish violin virtuoso of the time, Pablo de Sarasate. Lalo had the good luck to premiere this new symphony in early 1875 during a vogue for Spanish music in Europe (and just a month before Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen” made its debut). Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, in a performance with violinist Itzhak Perlman, is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
