Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871-1942)
Four months after the death of Brahms, Alexander Zemlinsky completed his Symphony #2 in B-flat major which includes a tribute to him in its finale (inclusion of a passacaglia and in the form of a theme and variations, as is the Brahms 4th). Zemlinsky did not take sides in the Brahms/Wagner debate, and his music shows influence of both. After its premiere, the Zemlinsky B-flat symphony won the Beethoven Prize that was financed by Brahms. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
