The Piano Trio - piano, violin and cello - had been a popular form in Western Europe since at least the time of Haydn's Trios in the 1760s. But even by the late 19th century the form never caught hold in Russia. So when Tchaikovsky's patroness, Nadezhda von Meck, in 1880 asked him for a Piano Trio he wrote back to her that he had "antipathy for this combination of instruments." Nonetheless, a year later he wrote to her again to say that he was experimenting with "this sort of music" and had begun writing a trio. A month after that he wrote again: "The Trio is finished ... now I can say with some conviction that my work is not all bad. But I am afraid, having written all my life for orchestra, and only taken late in life to chamber music, I may have failed to adapt the instrumental combinations to my musical thoughts." He needn't have worried. Colleagues praised his Trio (and some offered suggestions, which Tchaikovsky accepted) and, with its elegiac feel, became a model for future elegies from Russian composers. That he came to chamber music late, Tchaikovsky ended up writing only three string quartets, a string sextet (the "Souvenir de Florence") and the epic Piano Trio in A minor. That Trio is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
