Composer & Pianist John Field (1782-1837)
Irish-born composer John Field eventually settled in Russia, having first gone to St Petersburg in 1803 at about age 21. In 1815 he composed his Piano Concerto #5 with the title, “L'incendie par l'orage” (Fire from the Storm). It’s unknown for sure but this title may be a reference to events of 1812 and aftermath when Napoleon invaded Russia resulting in the deaths of more than a million soldiers and citizens within just six months. Or maybe not. Nonetheless, the first movement of the Concerto contains a stormy passage with a gong, other percussion and a second piano (probably just to enhance the sound of the early quieter pianos of the time). Listen for this passage to start ten minutes into the Concerto. The Piano Concerto #5, “L'incendie par l'orage,” is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
