Pianist Rudolf Firkušný (1912-1994)
Pianists tend to avoid Czech composer Antonín Dvořák's only Piano Concerto because it doesn't offer any flashy showmanship for the soloist even though the concerto is actually one of the most difficult to perform (it was once described as having been written for “two right hands”) and despite the music being exceptionally good. Later, the Czech pianist and pedagogue Vilém Kurz reworked the soloist’s part, changing octaves and simplifying some of the difficult passages. That revision is usually played today. Once a student of Kurz, Czech pianist Rudolf Firkušný performed that revised version for much of his career before turning to the original Dvorak version late in his career, and you’ll hear Firkušný perform Dvořák's original version in a 1990 recording for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
