Franz Joseph Haydn worked for the Esterhazy family for nearly 30 years. Approaching 60 years old, by 1790 the Esterhazy's had increased his pension but dismissed the entire musical staff. Famous across Europe and with pockets full of money but nothing much to do, he accepted a commission for six symphonies from an impresario in London, which eventually became an offer for twelve. His time in London was the high point of his career. He was an international star, London audiences loved him, and in one year in London he earned more than he did in 30 years working for the Esterhazy family. The final of his twelve "London" symphonies was also his final symphony ever. It premiered in mid April 1795, then Haydn conducted it again three weeks later for his London farewell concert. That capstone symphony, #104, is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
