Benjamin Godard (1849-1895)
A child prodigy on violin, French composer Benjamin Godard (1849-1895) studied briefly with Henri Vieuxtemps. After study at the Paris Conservatory and unsuccessful attempts to win the Prix de Rome (for composition), he devoted himself to composition and was prolific having written three symphonies, three string quartets, four violin sonatas and many other works including over a hundred songs. By 1882 his fame was so renowned that a festival was produced to feature only his music and in 1897 was appointed professor at the Paris Conservatory. But times and tastes changed after his death in 1895 and most of his music fell into obscurity. Godard’s impassioned Violin Concerto #2 was very successful and is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
