Classical Music Playlist, September 30, 2022
In his Symphony No. 45, Haydn sent a message to his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, on behalf of his musicians that they were tired of staying so late into the autumn at the Prince’s summer palace and wanted to be dismissed to go back home to their families in the city. Haydn sent this message in the final movement by ending each musician’s part in turn, then having them get up and leave the stage until finally only two violinists remained to quietly play the finish. The Prince got the message.
Listen today at 2:00pm for Haydn's Symphony No. 45, the “Farewell” symphony.
