Beethoven in 1805 by Joseph Willibrord Mähler
Beethoven’s first two piano concertos are numbered by the order of their publishing, not composition. Therefore, what we call his Piano Concerto No. 2 was actually composed first, and his Piano Concerto No. 1 was composed second. The first-composed (“No. 2”) is a more youthful composition and for a minimal orchestra that could have been performed at a small venue and so he withheld it in favor of his next concerto. The second-composed (“No. 1”) is a more mature composition and by far the more grand statement using a full orchestra. This second-composed “Piano Concerto No. 1” is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
