Ralph Vaughan Williams (1921) by E. O. Hoppé
While English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams conceded that some movements might evoke moods, activity and locations of London, he remained adamant that his "A London Symphony" - often referred to unofficially as his "Symphony #2" - was not "program" music that depicted such scenes but was "absolute music." To further avoid the impression of it being program music, he even wrote in program notes for a concert that he should have more accurately titled it, "Symphony by a Londoner." It’s today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
