In his later symphonies, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius abandoned traditional development of themes for a more free expression of emotions. He wrote in 1912, "I intend to let the musical thoughts and their development determine their own form in my soul." And following a performance of his Sixth symphony after its premiere in 1923, he further confirmed this by saying, "I do not think of a symphony only as music in this or that number of bars, but rather as an expression of a spiritual creed, a phase in one's inner life." And perhaps the inner life he was feeling when he composed his Sixth symphony is revealed in what he said about it in 1943: "The Sixth symphony always reminds me of the scent of the first snow." The lyrical Symphony No. 6 by Jean Sibelius is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
