1803 Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven by Christian Hornemann
It's often said that Beethoven was an innovator who moved music along in its evolution. One early innovation were in his early (Opus 5) two cello sonatas, or as he titled them, "Two Grand Sonatas for the Harpsichord or Pianoforte with Violoncello obbligato." The cello marked as "obbligato" is the innovation. Prior to Beethoven, sonatas with keyboard and cello had the cello, essentially, just adding harmony, ad lib, or duplicating the keyboard's left hand part. In Beethoven's "obbligato," the cello part is completely written out and of equal importance; thus, the meaning of "obbligato" here: obligatory and indispensable, equal to the keyboard part with its own original things to say. Beethoven's Opus 5 Cello Sonata No. 1 is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
